There’s no clear-cut answer as to when it’s right to move, considering that every season comes with its struggles and benefits to families relocating. While almost 80% of Americans prefer moving between April and September, that doesn’t make that duration the best. First, the high percentage means a scramble in the offices of most professional movers, leading to higher rates.

Again, many activities take place during the time, and it’s easy to run into heavy traffic, delaying your moving progress. While winter isn’t the best time to engage your favorite moving company, it has some advantages that you may want to consider. Similarly, don’t forget to consider the disadvantages and weigh your options to see what fits your preferences.

Pros of Off-season Moving

1. Less Competition for Homes and Movers

The number of families relocating during the off-season is relatively low compared to the scramble during summer or fall. As a result, you stand a better chance of securing an appointment with your chosen moving company at your most convenient time. Considering that landlords won’t wish to have a free house, getting your dream home at lower renting rates is easier than the other seasons.

Again, the number of people purchasing homes is limited. As a result, you stand a better chance of getting a good house at a lower price compared to the other times of the year.

2. Better Moving Rates and Discounts

The number of people moving is limited, meaning the professional movers are scrambling for clients. As a result, getting better pricing and great deals on these services is much easier than at other times of the year.

3. Flexibility

Moving companies are typically free during the off-season compared to any other time of the year. Thus, you can easily find a company you want on the day and time that best matches your schedules. Again, most businesses close during the winter months, meaning you don’t have to feel bad about missing work.

4. Fewer Distractions

Fewer people moving means you get the services you need without waiting at the moving companies’ offices. Again, not many activities and constructions happen during winter. As a result, you won’t have to deal with heavy traffic as it happens in summer.

5. More Favorable Weather

The scorching summer sun can be dehydrating and exhausting. However, moving during the off-season can be a little cool, especially if there are fewer snowy surprises (massive snowfalls) to deal with or numbing colds during the day you’re moving.

Cons of Moving During Off-season

1. Poor Weather

Moving during winter means persevering poor weather conditions, including tracking in mud, dirt, and debris. Again, the location you’re moving to may make the experience less bearable, especially if snowstorms are the norm (some places experiences snowfalls as high as 85 inches yearly).

2. Deny You Time for Holidays

Most family gatherings, friends’ parties, and other fun activities occur during the off-season. As a result, you may have to sacrifice the exciting moments to move.

3. Low Rates on Your Home

Few people buy or relocate during the off-season. As a result, that will mean lower rates when you’re selling the house you’re leaving.

4. Costly Preparations

Poor weather conditions make it hazardous for your moving company and require extra preparations to favor the circumstance. Again, you’ll need to put in more effort to ensure that your new home has the correct utilities for the season.

Moving during winter can be less hectic, especially if you have all the required preparations and precautions in place and work with excellent movers. If you have kids, also ensure that you’re comfortable changing them to a new school mid-year.
